Pudding’s Care After Swallowing a Fish Hook

Living Our Core Value: Compassion

Image

When a puppy named Pudding arrived at our hospital in obvious distress, his family knew something was wrong. He was frantically pawing at his mouth, and imaging quickly revealed the cause: he had swallowed a large fish hook.

Removing a foreign object like this safely required the expertise of multiple teams. Emergency and internal medicine clinicians, along with other teammates, worked together to carefully remove the hook and get the puppy on the road to recovery.

But for the puppy’s family, the emergency brought another source of worry: the cost of care. When the client shared his concerns, Medical Director Dr. Jason Pintar was able to offer some financial support through our newly launched Values in Action Fund.

The puppy went on to make a full recovery. And when his owner learned how the team had come together to care for his puppy and support his family, he was so overwhelmed with gratitude that he broke down in tears.

For us, that moment captures what Compassion looks like at our hospital. It’s providing exceptional medical care when a patient needs it most. And it’s also recognizing the person standing beside that patient and understanding that they may need support, too.
