Living Our Core Value: Compassion

Compassion extends beyond caring for patients at our hospital. It also means caring for the people who support them, especially when the work we do brings us alongside clients and families during some of life’s most difficult moments.
Our teams regularly help clients navigate illness, grief and end-of-life decisions. While supporting others through those experiences is an important part of veterinary medicine, it can also take an emotional toll on the people providing that care.
Recognizing this, we’ve partnered with Patricia Davis, LCSW, VSW, C-AAIS to create opportunities for teammates and community members to learn, reflect and find support. Sessions like “Compassion Fatigue” have given our hospital team practical tools for managing the emotional demands of the profession and recognizing when they may need support themselves.
Other sessions have focused on helping both teammates and clients navigate loss. Held in honor of Pet Remembrance Day, “Heart to Heart on Healing” created a space to remember and honor the pets we’ve lost, while “Preparing the Heart” offered guidance around anticipatory loss and end-of-life decision-making.
These conversations are a reflection of what our Core Value of Compassion means to us. It’s about recognizing that grief and loss affect everyone involved, and making sure no one feels like they have to navigate those experiences alone.
