The Surgery Service at GSVS consists of three full-time Board Certified Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. The Surgery Service works as a team with our other specialty groups to provide cutting edge veterinary medical care.

Thomas D. Scavelli, DVM
Diplomate ACVS
Founder and Director of Garden State Veterinary Specialists. He is a 1982 graduate of The New York State College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University. Following graduation, Tom completed an internship and 3 year surgical residency program at The Animal Medical Center in New York City. He became a Diplomate of The American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1987 and headed a surgical service at The Animal Medical Center for 6 years. He established a surgical referral practice (Veterinary Surgical Specialists) in 1990 which has evolved into Garden State Veterinary Specialists.

Michael G. Hoelzler, DVM
Diplomate ACVS
Michael is a 1999 graduate of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. He completed a small animal rotating internship at the Ontario Veterinary College in 2000, and a surgical internship at Affiliated Veterinary Specialists in Jacksonville, Florida in 2001. He completed a surgical residency at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in 2004. Michael joined GSVS in the spring of 2004, and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2005. Dr. Hoelzler has authored several manuscripts and book chapters on related surgical topics.

Ryan Fulcher, DVM
Diplomate ACVS
Ryan is a 2001 graduate of Tufts University School of Medicine. He completed a small animal rotating internship in 2002 and a surgical residency in 2005 at The Animal Medical Center in New York City. He joined the GSVS surgery department in the spring of 2005. Ryan became a Diplomate of The American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2006.

Roelof Irausquin, DVM
Diplomate ACVS
Roelof is a 1999 graduate of the University of Florida School of Veterinary Medicine. He completed a small animal rotating internship in 2000, a surgical internship in 2002, and a surgical residency in 2005, all at Garden State Veterinary Specialists. Rud became a Diplomate of The American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2010.

Donniel Astor, VMD
Practice Limited to Surgery
Donniel is a 2006 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed two internships; one at Garden State Veterinary Specialists in small animal medicine and surgery from 2007-2008 and the second at Garden State Veterinary Specialists in small animal surgery in 2008.
