Services Meet Our Staff Referral Policy Internship/Externship Programs

An important focus of GSVS is our commitment to the training of young veterinarians. Our internship program typically is responsible for the clinical education of a select group of highly motivated, hard working veterinarians who spend one year rotating through the different specialty services of our hospital. Once graduating from our program, our interns are well prepared for the rigorous veterinary residency programs throughout the country or the challenges of high quality, general veterinary practice. Their training centers around both assisting in the clinical management of patients with our full-time staff of specialists as well as participating in the numerous lectures provided both by house staff and outside lecturers throughout the year.

Garden State Veterinary Specialists is a 24-hour referral hospital which also provides emergency and critical care. It is staffed by 13 specialists who are board certified in the following fields: surgery, internal medicine, emergency and critical care, ophthalmology, dermatology, neurology, oncology and cardiology. We receive referrals from approximately 400 veterinarians in 150 practices throughout the tri-state area. Our hospital is fully equipped with the latest equipment: ultrasound with color-flow doppler, endoscopy, bronchoscopy, rhinoscopy, invasive and Doppler blood pressure monitoring, pulse oximetry, continuous ECG monitoring, in-house laboratory capabilities, laser treatment for glaucoma, phacoemulsification, ERGs, EMGs, BAERs, and fully equipped surgical suites outfitted for neurosurgery, soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, including total hip replacements. In addition, a Siemens CT scanner and General Electric MRI imaging scanner are on site and used commonly for patient care and intern training.

The intern will rotate through internal medicine, surgery, emergency and ophthalmology/ neurology/dermatology services. An intern’s duties will include primary evaluation and management of emergency cases, formulation of plans for hospitalized patients, and assisting specialists with procedures and surgery. The Specialists in all fields are available for consultation at any time. It is the goal of GSVS to provide a well-rounded practical experience that may lead to continuing education or employment at a high-quality small animal practice. The surgical service is run by 3 staff surgeons, all are Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. An extensive variety of orthopedic, soft tissue and neurosurgical cases are evaluated and treated by this service in a referral atmosphere. The interns perform surgical procedures with the staff on patients of this service. The medicine service is run by 3 staff Internists who perform a wide range of procedures, including ultrasound and a full complement of endoscopic services. All of the endoscopic evaluations (i.e., gastroscopy, colonoscopy, bronchoscopy, rhinoscopy, cystoscopy, thoracoscopy, etc.) utilize video technology which facilitates teaching these techniques and directly visualizing lesions. The ophthalmology/dermatology/neurology service is headed by 4 Specialists, who are Board Certified in their individual disciplines. The Emergency Service is run by Dr. Kate Palmer who is double Boarded in both Internal Medicine and Emergency/Critical Care. The interns have clinical responsibility with each Specialist. Didactic training consists of daily case based rounds, biweekly formal lectures by senior staff doctors, and monthly meetings by specialists in the tri-state area. Continuing education meetings are held twice a month, one monthly meeting being held on the premises. Licensure in the State of New Jersey is required.

Tinton Falls is primarily a residential community, minutes from the Jersey Shore. Centrally located in the State of New Jersey, it is an hour’s drive from either Philadelphia or New York City.
